Fair Trade Friday: India is now a Fair Trade market

This December marks the launch of the Fairtrade label in India, previously known primarily as a producer nation of Fair Trade goods. Fairtrade India will host events and provide information about products and producers to help the growing Indian middle and upper class to choose ethical consumption.

The Fairtrade mark officially launched on Thursday, November 21st. Led by producer groups, the movement aims to reconnect affluent classes in urban centers like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru with rural agricultural workers, many of whom remain desperately poor and under increasing strain from climate change.

This may be the beginning of a broader shift in the Fair Trade movement, from addressing global inequality to also confronting inequality within countries–especially developing countries, as The Guardian reports in its article on Fairtrade India, although inequality is hardly unique to the Global South.
